Actigall Description
Actigall is used to dissolve gallstones in patients who do not want surgery or cannot have surgery to remove gallstones. Actigall is also used to prevent the formation of gallstones in overweight patients who are losing weight very quickly. Actigall is a bile acid, a substance naturally produced by the body that is stored in the gallbladder. It works by decreasing the production of cholesterol and by dissolving the cholesterol in bile so that it cannot form stones.
Actigall is also used in patients with cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis causes a patient's liver to have problems and not work properly.
Actigall, a naturally occurring hydrophilic bile acid, derived from cholesterol, is present as a minor fraction of the total human bile acid pool. Oral administration of Actigall increases this fraction in a dose related manner, to become the major biliary acid, replacing/displacing toxic concentrations of endogenous hydrophobic bile acids that tend to accumulate in cholestatic liver disease. In addition to the replacement and displacement of toxic bile acids, other mechanisms of action include cytoprotection of the injured bile duct epithelial cells (cholangiocytes) against toxic effects of bile acids, inhibition of apotosis of hepatocytes, immunomodulatory effects, and stimulation of bile secretion by hepatocytes and cholangiocytes.

Actigall comes as a capsule to take by mouth.
It is usually taken two or three times a day to treat gallstones and two times a day to prevent gallstones in patients who are losing weight quickly.
This drug must be taken for months to have an effect. You may need to take Actigall for up to 2 years. Your gallstones may not completely dissolve, and even if your gallstones do dissolve you may have gallstones again within 5 years after successful treatment with Actigall.
Continue to take Actigall even if you feel well. Do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor.
Actigall Missing of dose
Do not take double dose. If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule.
